
It’s finally autumn, and I’ve been feeling that back-to-school-with-sharpened-pencils-and-a-new-Trapper-Keeper sort of vibe all month. When a subtle, early-fall breeze was blowing in through my opened window last week, I was overcome by a sensory memory of sitting in my 9th grade English class in 1989, taught by Mrs. Hathaway. One of the requirements for this class was to turn in what she called a “Monday Masterpiece” every Monday. The Monday Masterpiece was a weekly, topical, creative writing assignment wherein we could write on a loose theme using any format we desired and express ourselves freely. She’d choose a few each week to be read aloud to the class.
